Johnson’s Kitchen: Faith Based Soul Food
Johnson’s Kitchen
Johnson’s Kitchen, owned by Terrick and Venetria ‘V’ Johnson, began as a small home-based operation in 2020. Like many during the lockdown, they leaned into their passions, determined to emerge stronger on the other side of the pandemic. Inspired by regional, cultural, and familial cooking traditions, Terrick and V crafted delicious Southern home-style meals. What started as a Saturday-only food service quickly expanded to a seven-day-a-week operation within their first year—proof that the community craved food that felt like home.
By 2021, Johnson’s Kitchen had officially opened its doors in Pumpkin Center, where it was warmly embraced by the community. That same year, Terrick and V welcomed twins, their fifth and sixth children. As seasoned parents and dedicated professionals, they skillfully balanced their growing family while keeping their restaurant thriving. Johnson’s Kitchen soon became more than just a dining spot—it was a gathering place for prayer, fellowship, and shared meals, firmly rooted in Christian faith and community values.
Their journey continued in 2024 with the opening of their brick-and-mortar restaurant on Thomas Street in downtown Hammond. According to Terrick, the biggest difference between their original Pumpkin Center location and their new downtown home is the pace—while weekends were their busiest in Pumpkin Center, downtown Hammond keeps them bustling almost every night. The challenge is welcome, and they are embracing the fast-paced energy with enthusiasm.
Terrick and V feel deeply blessed in love, family, and business. Recently, Johnson’s Kitchen had the honor of catering for Southeastern’s championship-winning softball team. Before jetting off for their next challenge, the team stopped by to enjoy a hearty, home-cooked meal.
With a bright future ahead, Johnson’s Kitchen stands as a testament to hard work, faith, and the power of community. Housed in a location many consider a "lucky spot," this family-run business continues to serve up comfort, connection, and soul-filled Southern cuisine to all who walk through its doors.
