Erica Williams: Remember to Breathe

Attorney Erica Williams

Erica Williams is a force to be reckoned with—draped in pink, exuding professionalism, yet never afraid to show her individuality, thoughtfulness, or heart. Many in Hammond recognize her name from her 2022 campaign for 7th Ward City Court Judge. Though she did not secure the seat, her candidacy put her in the public eye, solidifying her reputation as a fighter for justice and integrity.

From a young age, Erica knew she wanted to be a voice for those in need. In fifth grade, she made the bold and confident decision to become an attorney—an ambition that she pursued relentlessly. After years of education and hard work, she achieved her goal, opening her own solo practice in 2004. Today, she operates from her own floor in a building on North Oak Street.

Her love for Downtown Hammond is evident. Situated at the heart of the city’s operations, her office is within walking distance of key institutions like the city court, clerk of court, Tangi Chamber, post office, as well as a variety of restaurants, shops, and coffee spots. It’s a setting that reflects her dedication not just to the law, but also to her community.

One striking feature of Erica’s office is the whiteboard in her conference room, where one word stands out in bold, colorful letters: BREATHE. It’s a simple yet powerful reminder for the tough days—when the weight of her work becomes heavy, she takes a breath, counts to ten, and grounds herself. Music, particularly rap, also plays a vital role in her self-care, helping her push through difficult cases or get into the right mindset before heading to the courtroom.

What sets Erica apart is her unwavering dedication to her clients. She treats each case with the same passion and diligence as if it were her only one. Even in her dreams, legal strategies run through her mind, and she wakes up ready to advocate with purpose. Her next goal? Expanding her criminal defense practice. With over 17 years as a public defender, Erica is committed to refining the skills she’s honed to better serve her clients in private practice.

Erica Williams is more than an attorney—she is an advocate, a mentor, and a pillar of the Hammond community. Her journey, passion, and perseverance exemplify the excellence of Black-owned businesses, proving that success is built on dedication, service, and an unyielding commitment to justice.
