Bayou Booksellers: All Are Welcome Here
Bayou Booksellers & Gift Shoppe
Leann Miller, alongside her husband Aaron Miller, is the co-owner of Bayou Booksellers & Gift Shoppe. The couple purchased the beloved bookstore in January 2024, seamlessly integrating themselves into the downtown community. While they may be new owners, their passion for fostering a welcoming space in Hammond is undeniable.
Their retail journey began just a few months earlier when they opened The Wooden Grove Co. in October 2023. After moving downtown, they noticed a lack of retail spaces catering to families. Inspired by the opportunity to fill that gap, they found a location, took a leap of faith, and launched their first shop—something they had dreamed of for years.
Just four months later, the community was shocked to learn that Bayou Booksellers, a staple in downtown Hammond for 27 years, was closing. Originally owned by Amanda, the store’s unexpected closure left many saddened. At first, the Millers reached out to Amanda simply to inquire about liquidating some of her inventory for The Wooden Grove. However, the night before their scheduled meeting, Amanda called Leann with a life-changing question: Would she be interested in buying Bayou Booksellers? Leann was stunned. She told Amanda she needed to pray about it. But by the next day, everything fell into place. Within 30 minutes of their meeting, the Millers officially took ownership of the bookstore. The community rejoiced, and news outlets even covered the story of the store being saved.
For Leann, Bayou Booksellers is more than a store—it’s a space for connection. It has brought a deep sense of community, a gathering place where people can sit, read, study, enjoy coffee, and reconnect with one another. Aaron has been instrumental in revitalizing the book section, while also adding a nostalgic candy selection that brings back childhood memories. Even when the store is closed, Leann and her daughters often spend time inside, doing schoolwork and unwinding in the cozy book nook. The Millers have transformed Bayou Booksellers into a Third Space—a place outside of home and work where people can come together. In today’s fast-paced, digital world, these spaces are disappearing, but Bayou Booksellers is bridging that gap with events, book clubs, and a welcoming environment. Leann emphasizes: “There’s a seat for everybody at our table.”
Now a key component of Bayou Booksellers, The Wooden Grove continues its mission of showcasing locally curated gifts from artists, authors, and family-owned businesses—especially those run by homeschooling families, like the Millers. Leann believes that gifting should be intentional, and every product in their shop reflects that philosophy. The store has recently undergone renovations, including a newly positioned counter, freshly repainted shelves, and the addition of Joe’s Candy—a nostalgic candy section offering treats from childhood favorites. Soon, a dedicated space for local artists will be introduced, further cementing Bayou Booksellers as a place that celebrates creativity and community.
Leann describes Bayou Booksellers as a place that evokes nostalgia—like stepping into a store from childhood or a scene from a favorite movie. She acknowledges that bringing her vision to life takes time, but every step has been worth it. Her favorite part of owning the shop? Standing behind the register, chatting with customers, and getting to know them. More than just a business owner, she is a host, welcoming every visitor as if they were a guest in her home. Whether you’re stopping by to shop or simply to hang out, Leann wants you to know you’re welcome at her table.
